I don't agree that the quality is less this year. If anything, this promises to be a great vintage year, especially with such well respected companies as Kimbolton, Explosive Entertainment International (formerly Syd Howard) and Parente competing.

This isn't to slight the other competitors. I know there are first rate designers working with the other companies this year.

Note also that we haven't seen a US entrant win an award since the last time Eric Tucker competed. And Zambelli haven't competed since 1985 and that wasn't even a pyromusical. Lacroix competed last year and it is rare that a company will compete twice in a row.

Often it is the small companies who are more willing to take creative risks since they don't have a reputation to lose - only to gain. An established company may not want to take the risk of not winning for fear of appearing to be less than top quality. My experience has been that some of the more exciting and creative displays have come from relatively unknown designers.

I think it is going to be a very close competition this year and my prediction is that, once again, the manually fired displays will be very hard pressed to finish in the awards.

Paul.
