I got to spend some time this afternoon with Darryl Fleming, the designer of Kimbolton's entry in the competition. Without giving too much away, I can say that it should be a very exciting display with some interesting surprises.

One thing I can reveal is that there will be Maltese multi-break shells in the finale. I got to hold one and, wow, was it ever heavy - must have been at least 15kg.

For afficiandos of nautical shells, there will certainly be some in this display and I think the music will be very popular. Darryl was of the opinion that it makes sense to use music that is pretty much instantly recognisable, then the audience can concentrate on the fireworks with the anticipation that knowledge of the music brings. If the music is too obscure then it can deflect focus from the fireworks themselves.

As has been the case this year, it will be a complex display with somewhere between three and four thousand cues.

Finally, it will be the 100th display I've witnessed in Montreal so I hope it will be good. Despite being from England, I will write my report in as objective a fashion as possible.

Paul.

Yes, it is quite the coincidence. In the past 11 seasons (inluding this one) I have only missed three displays - the last one I missed was in 1995, as I noted in my report for that year:

"Canada -- July 16, 1995; Sunday
Due to torrential rain, I didn't attend this show. "

Now it is my duty to spend all the summer in Montreal to report on the competition. Someone has to do it though ;)

This year has been a great season and I think, assuming everything works properly tomorrow, that the final results won't be known until 10:30 tomorrow evening.

I was joking with Martyne Gagnon and Paul Csukassy today (for those who don't know, Martyne is the competition director and Paul is the chief pyrotechnician) that there should be more than just three Jupiters. We thought that perhaps there should also be a platinum Jupiter ... and possible an iron or wooden one too!! Seriously, the level of the competition this year is very high and it is a shame there can be only three winners.
