As Enkil said, the weather was somewhat extreme, giving the first ever weather-related delay to the start of the display.

My notebook got wet and it was difficult to write anything, but I will have my report up by around 1pm today, and will also post my thoughts here at that time.

What a day, what a season!

Well, what a way to end the competition. Here's the summary from my report:

"This was a great display to end the competition with. Good use of the different levels of the display, from the low to the high and a nice use of the lake. Some clever effects too, like the use of pyrotechnic whistles in "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly". Good choice of music in my opinion and a great finale which really built well with the music. A couple of technical difficulties were apparent and the team had bad weather during the setup which cost them time. Very good quality material used throughout, especially the candles which were very well timed so that it was difficult to determine sometimes if they were one shot or multi-shot. A bit of criticism is due, since the display was so good. There were a couple of spots where the wrong shells were mixed in, for example, colour shells in willow sequences and sometimes the synchronization wasn't as well demonstrated as at other times. My notes were quite difficult to read due to the rain through the middle of the display and this distracted from the display itself unfortunately which meant I probably lost some of the emotional feel. Would probably be in with the winners, but I suspect the bad weather and late start may have an impact on the final result, especially with the level of the competition so exceptionally high this year.

Darryl later explained to me that the initial silence after the first announcement of the commencement of the display was because the firing computer and the audio track timecode were not started in the right order. So the system had to be rebooted so the firing computer was ready before the timecode started. He said it was like a roller-coaster ride for everyone in the control room.

Somehow it seemed appropriate that my 100th display would have something unusual happen, and doubly appropriate that it was by England and affected by rain and bad weather!"


Later today, I'll put up my review of the competition, along with my personal rankings and predictions for the final result. It's a very tough one to call this year!

well, yes it was a great show

expect the weather kinda screw it up for me, i had difficulty concertrating on the fireworks with the wind and specially the rain

i also notice some of the problems with music

i dunno anymore, i think that if we had a normal weather i would have prolly enjoyed the show

some high quality fireworks, and huge ones with great color was there thro, i believe the fireworks were great, but synchronization was a problem in some places

anyways it will be interessing this wednesday, no doubt

Un feu d'une grande qualité, mais très peu original. Voilà résumée mon appréciation du feu d'artifice de Kimbolton Fireworks, dont j'attendais un spectacle plus raffiné et audacieux après leur victoire à Cannes l'an dernier, où d'autres concurrents prestigieux étaient pourtant en compétition.

Donc, cette "Soirée au cinéma" était d'une grande qualité. Le matériel pyrotechnique utilisé par Kimbolton était excellent, produisant une diversité considérable d'effets pyrotechniques. Contrairement à leur prestation de 1999 où la rampe 3 et le lac avaient été négligés au profit d'un déploiement concentré en haute altitude, Kimbolton a cette fois-ci bien occupé tout l'espace mis à la disposition des artificiers, présentant notamment plusieurs pièces nautiques. Enfin, je tiens à souligner la qualité exceptionnelle de la bande sonore. Les pièces musicales étaient regroupées en quelques blocs thématiques, espacés les uns des autres par une brève pause. À l'intérieur de ces blocs, cependant, les pièces s'enchaînaient magnifiquement, sans interruption. Mais, ce qui est encore plus remarquable, certains segments de la bande sonore étaient le fruit d'une soigneuse juxtaposition d'extraits distincts d'une même pièce (ex.: Riverdance).

Par contre, le spectacle était peu original. La thématique cinématographique a été privilégiée par plusieurs concurrents au fil des ans et, presque chaque fois, les mêmes pièces musicales sont entendues. Souvent, nous avons pu écouter "Star Wars", "Titanic" et "Moulin rouge" dans des spectacles pyromusicaux présentés à La Ronde. D'autres pièces avaient aussi été choisies par d'autres concurrents cette année, dont "Riverdance" (France), "Lady Marmalade" et "Sandstorm" (États-Unis). Par ailleurs, bien que les trois rampes et le lac aient été judicieusement occupés, la mise en scène du spectacle n'avait rien d'inédit. Il a aussi été difficile d'identifier des pièces pyrotechniques originales dans ce spectacle. La longue corde qui avait été déployée sur le lac en début de soirée et qui était visible à bord de la Grande Roue n'a pas produit l'effet escompté, si jamais elle a été allumée.

En confectionnant sa bande sonore, le concepteur expliquait dans le communiqué de presse avoir privilégié des musiques connues, que tous les spectateurs peuvent aisément identifier. Ce faisant, le concepteur n'a-t-il pas privilégier la facilité plutôt que la recherche et l'audace? Il est plus simple de retenir les musiques les plus populaires que de s'efforcer à identifier des pièces rarement choisies par les concepteurs pyromusicaux et qui sauront malgré tout soulever la foule.

Bref, Kimbolton a produit un très bon feu d'artifice mais, contrairement à plusieurs intervenants ayant déjà exprimé leur avis dans ce forum, je ne pense pas que cette firme puisse aspirer à un Jupiter cette année. Je range cette "Soirée au cinéma" au 6e rang de mon palmarès personnel avec une note de 33,19/40.
