I heard rumors and people telling me that the competition goes on in other major cities like Toronto and Vancouver and maybe other places in the world. Although I believe it only happens here, that's what I'm telling all of my fireworks friends. I'm telling them that the Mondial SAQ only happens in Montreal or does it................

Is this true?

Please reply soon.

There are several places in the world with fireworks competition, especially Spain, Italy, France and Canada.

In Canada, we currently have the following competitions:

Les Grand Feux Lotto Quebec, Montmorency Falls, Quebec City
Les Grand Feux du Casion, Lac Leamy, Gatineau
Celebration of Light, English Bay, Vancouver
Symphony of Fire, Ontario Place, Toronto
Les Grands Feux Molson du Canada, Lac des Nations, Sherbrooke

The Toronto and Vancouver competitions used to be sponsored by Benson and Hedges and were called the "Symphony of Fire" competitions. Montreal also used to be sponsored by Benson and Hedges, but was not part of the Symphony of Fire series.

After tobacco sponsorship was made illegal, the SAQ became the sponsors of the Montreal competition, and hence the title Mondial SAQ. There is only one Mondial SAQ. The Toronto competition stopped altogether, but started up again this year - I'm not sure who the sponsor is. In Vancouver, a society was formed to save the competition and it still continues. Montreal has the largest number of contestants and the biggest budget per show of any competition in Canada, and possibly the largest budget per show of any competition in the world, being approximately 50% more per show than at the competition in Cannes, France.

There are several competitions in Spain; several in Italy, Germany and Belgium. Cannes is one of the longest running competitions and one of the most important, but still smaller than Montreal.

Some simple google searches for "Fireworks competition" will find the websites for all the above.

So, that possibly makes the Mondial SAQ the biggest fireworks competition in the world?????? That's amazing! Now that is a very very interesting fact to know. It's not that surprising either considering everything that goes on in the whole competition, not to mention the poplularity of the competition, I mean look how many people show up!!! I feel so lucky to live in Montreal!

BTW Paul, last year I went to Montmorency, Quebec City, and I saw a wonderful display! I'm not sure about the details, but we were only sight seeing that day and we never expected to see fireworks, so we got a double treat!

As for "The Symphony of Fire" competition in Toronto, my uncle said that it had been cancelled last year for some reason and this year it's back. I'm not sure if I'm going to Toronto, but chances are I'll probably see a display! (I think not)

I still can't believe the Mondial SAQ is probably the biggest fireworks competition in the world, that makes me feel so good!

THE MONDIAL SAQ RULES!!!!!!!! There's only one.....

Cheers,

Trav.
